Death Cab For Cutie

You learn something new every day. I had heard of the band but just found out today that these guys are LOCAL – originally from Bellingham, WA – we seem to be the seedbed for the indie music scene, what w/Rolling Stone voting us #1 place for indie music back in I can’t remember when… [h/t Ron Pi & Matt Martinson - who know DCFC personally]

(from wikipedia):

Death Cab for Cutie (often shortened to Death Cab or DCFC) is an American indie pop rock band formed in Bellingham, Washington in 1997… Death Cab for Cutie was officially formed at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington, and lyrics from many of the early songs include local references that were important to the band’s development. Many of the early songs were recorded in the basement of an Ellis Street home Ben lived in with several roommates in Bellingham.

This is a band I gotta play in church… too bad they signed w/Atlantic but they still gots that indie feel. And maybe they’ll do that subversive Radiohead thing and have pay-as-u-please downloads. At any rate I’m still wondering which album to download first. They’re pretty prolific. Any suggestions? Anything that gots that local Bellingham feel w/lots of local references?

Dude, start with Plans, then Transatlanticism, and then I like You can play these songs with Chords and The Photo Album. Really I think it’s just chronologically backwards.

    Local Bands. Hmmm.

The Postal Service is basically Death Cab. It’s a compilation of Ben Gibbard (DCFC) and a guy down in LA I think. You would know the song “Such Great Heights” from the UPS commercials.

The Pale Pacific are great. They sound a lot like death cab. But a little more fun.

No Fi Soul Rebellion are FUN! They are a Bellingham Band. Not “big”, but a really great band.

If you want more of the local-feeling stuff, I’d go back to “You Can Play These Songs With Chords” and “The Photo Album”. But “Transatlanticism” and “Plans” are more pleasant, I think, and easier to get into. I can’t believe you hadn’t heard of Death Cab! For a man who plays Sufjan and Jeff Buckley in church, Death Cab seems like a natural fit, and they’re pretty well known. They’re one of my all-time favorite bands.
